Study on the Relationship between Plasma 50Hydroxyindoleacetic acid and Psychopathology in Infantile Autism

Abstract
Plasma 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid(5-HIAA) concentrations were measured in 11 autistic disorders, 8 atypical pervasive developmental disorders, and 10 control subjects to elucidate the biological etiology in pervasive developmental disorders.
@ES The results are summarized as follows :
@EN 1) In the typical autistic group, the mean plasma 5-HIAA concentrations were significantly elevated compared to the atypial and control group.
2) In the control group, there was a greater tendency of the 5-HIAA concentrations to be increased with age than the typical and atypical pervasive developmental disorders.
3) No significant correlation was found between the 5-HIAA concentrations and the severity of psychopathology in pervasive developmental disorders.
Tnese findings support the hypothesis of a possible involvement of indoleamine dysfunction in the production of autistic symptoms, and it was suggested that use of debrisoquine to inhibit peripneral metabolism of indoleamine and the deveopment of
detailed assessment instrument of psychopathology would increase the validity of this study.
